Free Wikispaces upgrade for higher ed!
I make no bones about the fact that I love Wikispaces! The company provides excellent software and great support. On top of that they regularly add useful functionality. What more could you ask for? How about getting it all for free? For those who have not tried Wikispaces, it is a hosting service for wikis, those neat little websites that anyone can edit (with your permission). Like Wikipedia, you ask? Yup that’s the granddaddy of all wikis. And yes, anyone can edit the pages in Wikipedia – nearly all umpty-gazillion of them. Wikispaces uses different software but it’s the same idea.
Yesterday Wikispaces decided to offer free private wikis with no adds to higher educators (see Free wikis for educators). This level of service used to cost us $50; until now it was only free to K-12. I will personally be able to take immediate advantage of this development. I will also be sharing the good news with a number of colleagues whom I have helped to create wikis at Wikispaces.
As a tool, the wiki is a wonderful “blank slate” kind of thing. It can be whatever you want, and it’s a great way for student to collaboratively build a website. Kudos to Wikispaces!
