Ten years of social networking trends

October 9, 2015

The Pew Research Center has been tracking social media usage in the USA for more than ten years. In that time participation has grown from 7% of adults to 65%. Pew’s analysis of more than two dozen surveys documents the spread of this technology across America. Some notes: women are a little more active than men, Hispanics are more active than African-Americans.

FYI, “social media” is not just Facebook; it’s also Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.

Your students are not you

That’s one of our faculty development mantras at Notre Dame. It’s no surprise that 9 out of 10 young adults use social media, but that number drops significantly with each older segment. While the percent of users aged 65 and older has tripled, it’s still barely one-third.
