Car chase video assignment
This assignment idea comes from Like a Car Chase on Tom Woodward’s “Bionic Teaching” blog.
Take any video. Add your voice over as if you were a local TV news anchor attempting to provide color commentary without stating anything as a fact or with certainty.
Tom says this is the opposite of what we normally want students to do. To get the point across even more effectively, you might have students do both an understated version with no definite statements and also a version that overstates things. In his hilarious example, Tom underlays a helicopter sound loop, so he sounds like a TV reporter hovering over the site. For your video choice, Tom says bad is good: “Look for something with virtually no action. If it’s exciting, you’ll never keep up.”
