Amazon provides E-textbook rental pricing

July 21, 2011

Wired Campus reports that Amazon has rolled out an e-textbook rental program that behaves more like a subscription than a purchase. Under this program, students are able to download temporary copies of textbooks on a Kindle device or using Kindle software on a computer or mobile device – at a fraction of the purchase price.

I scanned Amazon’s info page on this program and then looked up The Art of Game Design, an excellent book I read earlier this year. The retail price is $59.95, but you can rent it from Amazon starting at $15.84 — for ninety days the price rises to $23.30.

Over the next few years we will see additional clever pricing schemes for electronic textbooks, but this is definitely a step in the right direction!

When will manufacturers let you buy a paper copy of a book and get the ebook for just a few dollars more? I’d love that option.
