Gates gives $2.5M to Institute of Play

May 9, 2011

On April 27 the Gates Foundation announced a series of grants that included $2.5 million to the Institute of Play to “build a set of game-based pedagogical tools and game-design curricula that can be used within both formal and informal learning contexts” (see Gates Foundation Announces Portfolio of Innovative Grants). This announcement is yet another indication that educational leaders are placing increasing value on games.

The Institute of Play is directed by Katie Salen, author of Rules of Play and co-lead designer of the award-winning “Gamestar Mechanic,” a game with a built-in game design curriculum. Salen and the Institute are also deeply involved in “Quest to Learn,” an innovative New York City public school whose mission centers on “translation of the underlying form of games into a powerful pedagogical model for its 6-12th graders.”
