Seven award-winning education apps

I Education Apps Review recently announced its 2010 IEAR Community Best App Awards, honoring outstanding software for iPhone, iTouch, and iPad. Many of the winners are designed for younger students, but here is an edited list of titles that should have particular appeal at the college level.

  1. Science – Virtual Frog Dissection – “dissect” without harming a real frog
  2. English – Shakespeare in Bits – fully-animated version of “Romeo and Juliet” with unabridged text, notes, summaries, analysis, in-line translation, and character biographies
  3. Art – Brushes – create original artwork with realistic brushes, an advanced color picker, layers, and zooming
  4. Music – iShred – a virtual guitar
  5. Foreign Language – Mindsnacks Spanish – six games to build vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and conversation skills
  6. Creativity – Storyboard – create a movie storyboard with drawings of characters and props
  7. Special Mention – Edmodo – a Twitter-like platform for sharing assignments, ideas, files, and events
