Thirsty for a good show

November 20, 2009

I thought it would be instructive to post a sample of an effective PowerPoint presentation, so I went to SlideShare and chose a show that has been viewed more than a quarter of a million times! It deals with water use and the shortage of drinking water around the planet. “Thirst” was produced by Jeff Brennan of Apollo Ideas, a presentation consulting and design firm. By the way, it is very easy to add a presentation from SlideShare to a blog.

That’s a very good point. I picked it because it was visually appealing and the information was compelling. It has relatively little text, which is a generally a good thing. It probably took a long time to prepare, though, and I often admonish people who worry about making things too “pretty.” There’s a point at which “good enough” makes a lot more sense and you start to get diminishing returns. — Chris

Yes, this is certainly a good presentation, but only on the Internet. That is, it would not be a good presentation if done live because all of the information is already on the slides. There is no reason to listen to the presenter. On the other hand, presentations that are effective live often are ineffective when the slides are posted on the Internet without commentary.
