Wireless digital microscope
The ProScope Mobile Microscope is one of the few data-gathering devices I have seen that interfaces with a tablet. It may LOOK like a small hair dyer, but this hand-held lets you zoom in to a tiny space and view live video or capture stills wirelessly from an iPad or other iOS device. The basic model sells for less than $300 on Amazon and the companion software is free on iTunes. An ambitious person could even write a custom app for the device using the free software development kit provided by the manufacturer, Bodelin Technologies. There must competing products, but this is the first to capture my attention.
I can imagine a bunch of applications for this kind of device, including
- Biology lab work
- Archaeology field work
- Crime scene investigation
- Electronics quality control
- Medical patient exam
- Creative photography
Please forgive my including a commercial video, but it explains the device very nicely.
